Best Payment Gateways in India (2026)
Razorpay and Cashfree are the best payment gateways for most Indian businesses in 2026, both charging around 2% plus GST per transaction with T+2 settlement. PayU and CCAvenue suit larger enterprises, and Stripe requires a foreign entity. UPI transactions are typically cheapest.
Gateway choice looks like a rate comparison and is actually a settlement and support comparison. Every major Indian gateway charges roughly 2%. What differs is how fast you get your money, how bad the failure rate is, and whether anyone answers when payments stop working.
How we assessed these
- Transaction rate across UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets
- Settlement cycle and whether instant settlement is available
- Success rate and failure handling
- Onboarding requirements and approval time
- Quality of developer documentation and support
The options
Razorpay
Best for: Most Indian startups and SMBsThe default choice for good reasons: clean documentation, fast onboarding, and a product suite covering subscriptions, payment links, payouts and invoicing. Standard pricing is around 2% plus GST, with negotiable rates at volume.
- Best developer experience
- Broad product suite
- Fast onboarding
- Good dashboard
- Support slows at scale
- Rate negotiation needs volume
Cashfree
Best for: Businesses needing fast settlement and payoutsComparable rates to Razorpay with a stronger payouts product — useful for marketplaces and anyone disbursing money to vendors or partners. Instant settlement options are available at a premium.
- Strong payouts and disbursals
- Competitive rates
- Instant settlement option
- Smaller ecosystem than Razorpay
- Documentation less polished
PayU
Best for: Mid-market and enterprise merchantsLong-established with strong enterprise relationships and good success rates on cards. Onboarding is more involved and the developer experience is dated compared with newer entrants, but reliability at scale is proven.
- Proven at enterprise scale
- Good card success rates
- Strong bank relationships
- Slower onboarding
- Dated developer tooling
CCAvenue
Best for: Businesses needing many payment options and currenciesOne of India's oldest gateways, supporting an unusually broad set of payment methods and multi-currency acceptance. The interface shows its age, but the coverage is genuinely wider than most competitors.
- Widest payment method coverage
- Multi-currency support
- Long track record
- Dated interface
- Integration is more work
Stripe
Best for: Indian founders selling internationally through a foreign entityExcellent product, but requires a US, Singapore or other supported-country entity. Many Indian SaaS companies incorporate abroad partly for this reason. Not an option for a purely domestic Indian business.
- Best-in-class API
- Excellent subscription billing
- Global coverage
- Requires foreign entity
- Higher rates
- Not for domestic-only businesses
How to choose
Prioritise UPI experience
UPI dominates Indian online payments and is usually the cheapest method. A gateway that buries UPI below card entry measurably reduces conversion. Test the actual checkout flow on a phone before signing.
Ask about settlement, not just rate
T+2 is standard. Instant settlement costs more but transforms working capital for businesses with tight cash cycles. A 0.1% rate difference matters far less than getting paid two days sooner.
Negotiate once you have volume
Published rates are list prices. Above roughly ₹25 lakh monthly processing, most Indian gateways will negotiate — often to 1.5% or below. Businesses that never ask keep paying list.

Frequently asked questions
Which payment gateway has the lowest charges in India?
Published rates cluster around 2% plus GST across Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU, so headline differences are small. UPI transactions are generally cheapest, and rates become genuinely negotiable above roughly ₹25 lakh monthly volume. Compare on settlement speed and success rate rather than a 0.05% rate gap.
What documents are needed to open a payment gateway account in India?
PAN, GSTIN, a current account in the business name, address proof and a live website with visible pricing, terms, refund and privacy policies. Sole proprietors can register too. Approval typically takes two to seven working days, and incomplete policy pages are the most common cause of rejection.
Can I use Stripe in India?
Not for a domestic Indian entity — Stripe requires incorporation in a supported country such as the US or Singapore. Many Indian SaaS companies incorporate abroad partly for this reason. For selling within India, use Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU.
How long does settlement take?
T+2 working days is standard across Indian gateways, meaning money reaches your bank two working days after the transaction. Instant and same-day settlement are available at a premium, typically an extra 0.1–0.3%. For businesses with tight working capital this is usually worth paying.
